Shinkansen Br.(connections between stringers and floorbeams in steel railway trusses)

1.Field of application

Steel bridge on Tokaido Shinkansen-railway, Japan.

2.Circumstances of Repair

Fatigue cracks at connections between stringers and floorbeams were found in 2004 after 40 years service.

3.Types of structure

The outline of the bridge structure is as follows.

Elevation and plan of the bridge are shown in Fig.1.

4.Details of loading

300 Shinkansen trains / day .

5.Description of damage

The detail of connections between stringers and floorbeams is shown in Fig.2.The detail of cracks and photographs are shown in Fig.3,Fig.4.

As a result of FEM analysis,the causes to show as follows were estimated.

Causes of fategue cracks-A were as follows:

  1. The stringers begin to bend with approach of the train.
  2. Therefore the connections move so that the angle variation occurs.
  3. The support plates on the stiffeners were forcedly rotated with the action.
  4. As a result,high stresses occur to the top side of the stiffeners.

6.Repair method applied

The Reinforcement structure that was adopted is shown in Fig.5.
